Can a believer, a Jesus follower, a God-loving person get what he/she wants?
We’ve all read the verse:
Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
But what “desires” does that refer to? The apostle James explains a bit further:
You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. James 4:2-4
You’re probably familiar with The Message Bible, and here’s how it clarifies the above verses in more practical terms:
Where do you think all these appalling wars and quarrels come from? Do you think they just happen? Think again. They come about because you want your own way, and fight for it deep inside yourselves. You lust for what you don’t have and are willing to kill to get it. You want what isn’t yours and will risk violence to get your hands on it. (James 4:1-2)
You wouldn’t think of just asking God for it, would you? And why not? Because you know you’d be asking for what you have no right to. You’re spoiled children, each wanting your own way. (James 4:2-3)
Amazing isn’t it?
We’ve always made the mistake of just thinking of ourselves. But, God has called each of us to be ministers to one another. God is interested in mending hearts and saving souls, and he has called ordinary people like you and me to reach out to others. He has chosen to use human, broken vessels to bring healing, hope, and freedom to those oppressed by fear and sin.
When we bring our own desires to God’s mirror, His Bible, we find that we are still so selfish. Yet, Jesus made a promise:
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33
So if we seek FIRST to do what God has called us to do, He will take care of all the other little things we desire – the house, the car, the boat, etc.
Why? Because God rewards!
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6
When the Bible says “those who diligently seek Him” it refers to those who seek to do the Kingdom business first!
And when we take care of His business, He will take care of our cares, needs and desires!
So, here are the 3 easy steps to get what you want, after you’ve made God’s Kingdom your priority:
Step 1: Ask
… and it will be given to you
Step 2: Seek
… and you will find
Step 3: Knock
… and it will be opened to you!
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
Only God can give you the clarity, courage and the determination you’ll need to do the task he designed you for in His Kingdom.
And once you’ve taken care of His business, He will meet your every need that will not hinder your life, but rather get you closer to His heart.
